The girl who counts

Sixteen, lowborn, and the only one not screaming. Lekha can un-write a death — but every life she saves is paid for in days off a countdown only she can see, and leaves a grey circle that takes whoever stands inside it. She walks north against the whole fleeing world to reach her brother before the death she has already seen.

The deserter who cannot lie

A young foot-soldier who walked away from the war and tells the truth about it — the one commodity rarer than grain. He falls in beside Lekha on the road north and never quite leaves. He knows exactly what the front does to spear-carriers, and says so.

The grandmother

Lekha's grandmother — a widow with a grain-measure bowl she will not abandon. The first life Lekha ever buys back, and the first bill. She ties the madder headcloth to Lekha's wrist and asks for the one thing that will cost the most: bring your brother back to me.

The brother, conscripted

A soft-faced farm boy of seventeen marched north with a madder-red army band on his arm. Lekha has already seen the sunset he dies under — Day 18, a spear, churned mud. The entire walk is the space between her and that sunset.

The bard

A performer who sells the war back to the people fleeing it — golden lines, clean deaths, paid in grain. A circle pays him to be told the war makes sense. His arithmetic and Lekha's do not agree.

The correct man

An agent of the Order, unnervingly spotless under the falling ash, carrying nothing but a dark iron staff. Where physics break and shadows fall two directions, his alone falls straight. He does not hurry. Correct things never do.

The Ledger's black market

Under the only indigo awning in Vanikgrama, he sells certainties to the desperate — notched bone, knotted cord, a patient scale-pan. He recognizes what Lekha is with the flat interest of a fellow professional. "You feel it too. The pull."

The vale's frozen laughter

A small boy caught mid-laugh in two seconds that repeat forever — the human face of the Looping Vale, where a silent weapon broke time instead of the road. Lekha's power un-writes death; it has no grip on a life that will not move.

Grief with no voice left

In the Silent Camp, where sound has been eaten, a gaunt woman kneels at the dust-writing ground, her fingertip chalked to the second knuckle. She has no voice left to scream with. She writes instead — and what she teaches Lekha changes the meaning of every circle on the map behind her.
